About MOOCS

Massively open online courses (MOOCs) are learning platforms delivering high-quality content to hundreds or thousands of simultaneous users. MOOCs are courses designed around learning modules that include reading, video, homework exercises, quizzes, and in some cases final exams. Most MOOCs offer certificates of completion for continuing education credit. When offered by an educational institution, MOOCs can be for-credit courses that count toward degree requirements.

The IEEE Education Society creates MOOCs to help educate its members and the public. Each MOOC is announced through membership email and social media. Participants come from all over the world and collaborate together while learning something new about educating engineers and computer scientists.

Impact and application of Generative Artificial Intelligence within Education

  • Course opened on 15 September 2023
  • Abstract: With the launch of ChatGPT to the public, in November 2022, educational institutions are starting to feel the seismic impact that new Generative Artificial Intelligence tools could have on maintaining academic integrity and quality control over education. Educators’ emotions have ranged from intrigue and excitement to panic about massive disruption. This project outlines the basic premise/workings of ChatGPT, etc. However, the main work will be focused on designing a series of discussion forums and a wiki, which we will then use to encourage participants to share their learning and practice. This will help us collaboratively develop guidelines about how higher education staff can adapt to this disruptive technology (e.g. how to evolve assessment towards creative and critical thinking, how to re-orientate current educational and particularly assessment practices, how to get the most out of it, how to create a policy of use, etc.). This is intended to be a collaborative online space for sharing practice and exemplars and developing good guidance, particularly for those in the IEEE Education Society community.

Educational Robotics for all: Gender, Diversity, and Inclusion in STEAM

  • Abstract: Robotics and computational thinking are valuable tools for developing the pedagogy of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEAM), and for promoting the inclusion and integration of students. We currently have a multitude of robotic teaching tools at our disposal. These tools arise with the aim of promoting innovation and motivation of students during the learning process. Robots are more and more common in today's society. Therefore, it is important to integrate robots at all levels of our daily lives. This course focuses on the presentation of a combination of teaching methodologies, educational robotics tools and a student learning management methodology. All of this within a framework focused on strengthening the presence of women and other under-represented groups in engineering.

Open Education and OERs Repositories, the first MOOC of the Education Society, under the IEEEx program in edX.

  • Course offered in July 2017, October 2017 and March 2020
  • Abstract: This course offers a practitioner’s view of open education, open educational resources, repositories and applications for educators and professionals. This 5-week course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the ways in which open education and open educational resources are changing the rules of education. The purpose of the course is to help faculty and professionals dedicated to education to understand the advantages of open education and how they can apply it to their everyday teaching.
