Awards Committee | IEEE Education Society

The Awards Committee shall be responsible for recommending various forms of recognition for noteworthy contributions to the fields of interest to the Society. This committee shall be responsible for administering the Society’s awards programs and shall also see that deserving members are nominated for awards and prizes administered by the IEEE and other relevant organizations.

At least one-half of the members of the Awards Committee shall hold Fellow or Senior Member grade. The committee Chair may appoint sub-committees for individual Society awards, as well as representatives to committees involved in the selection of other awards in which the Society participates. Nominations for Society awards shall be considered annually, although awards need not be made annually.

The Awards Committee’s decisions are final and need not be ratified by the Board of Governors. The committee shall review the Society’s awards from time-to-time, and may propose modifications to existing society awards, as well as additional Society awards, subject to approval by the Board of Governors and the IEEE TAB.

The Awards Committee Chair shall prepare an annual report covering all of the awards activities. The Chair of this committee shall report to the Vice President for Educational Activities and Awards.

Biography

James J. Sluss Jr. (Senior Member, IEEE) received a B.S. degree in physics from Marshall University, Huntington, WV, USA, in 1984, and an M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA, in 1986 and 1989,
respectively.

He is a Regents Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering with the University of Oklahoma (OU), Norman, OK, USA, and has held various administrative roles of increasing responsibility within the OU system, most recently as Interim President of OU-Tulsa until the end of 2023. Notably, he served as the Systemwide Director of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 2005 to 2014, leading the School through a period of historic growth.

Dr. Sluss was the recipient of the FIE Ronald J. Schmitz Award in 2023, IEEE Education Society Distinguished Member Award in 2022, IEEE Education Society Edwin C. Jones, Jr., Meritorious Service Award in 2008 and the International Engineering Educator Honoris Causa “ING. PAED.IGIP h.c.” by the International Society for Engineering Education “for outstanding contributions in the field of Engineering Education” in 2015. He served on the Frontiers in Education (FIE) Steering Committee from 2012 to 2021, served as the Technical Program Co- Chair for FIE 2007, the General Go-Chair for FIE 2013, and as the FIE Steering Committee Chair from 2018 to 2020. He has served as a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Education Society from 2000 to present, serving in several officer positions, including a two-year term as the President from 2015 to 2016. He is in his 41 st year of membership in the IEEE and is a member of the IEEE Education Society and the IEEE Communications Society. He is a member of Optica (formerly, Optical Society of America), the International Society for Optics and Photonics, the International Society for Engineering Education, and the American Society of Engineering Education.

Biography

Oscar M. Bonastre (Senior Member, IEEE) received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer engineering from the University of Alicante, Alicante, Spain, in 1994 and 1995, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in telecommunications engineering from the University Politécnica de Valencia, Valencia, Spain, in 2007.

He has an academic and industrial career spanning more than 25 years. He has been with Miguel Hernandez University, Elche, Spain, since the year of its foundation in 1997. His research has focused on the areas of development of the Internet, among others.

Dr. Bonastre was the recipient of the IEEE Edwin C. Jones, Jr. Meritorious Service Award 2020. He is an Expert Evaluator for the European Commission and research agencies across Europe. He was appointed as the Vice Dean for International Relations in the College of Engineering from 2012 to 2015. He is active in the International Engineering Education Community, and his teaching interests include advanced distributed systems. He has a long service record with IEEE since 1997. He is a member of IEEE-HKN and holds membership in the IEEE Communications Society and the IEEE Education Society. He has been the Chair of the IEEE Spain Section. For more than a decade, he served on the Board of Directors of the IEEE Education Society Chapter of the Spanish Section and, during his period of chapter presidency from 2020 to 2021, he led the organization and promotion of numerous events about the use of technologies to support engineering education. He has been an Associate Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON EDUCATION, an Editorial Steering Committee Member of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON EDUCATION and IEEE Revista Iberoamericana Tecnologías del Aprendizaje (RITA), and the Co-Editor-in-Chief of TICAI, a journal supported by the IEEE Education Chapter of Portugal and Spain.
