The IEEE Spain Section was recognized within IEEE Region 8 (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) in 1968. It is one of the most active sections with great activity in affinity groups such as Life Members (LM), Women in Engineering (WiE), Young Professionals (YP), and Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT). As as proof of its extensive history, the second oldest Student Branch of IEEE Region 8 was created at the Technical University of Madrid (UPM), Spain.

Among all the chapters that are integrated into the IEEE Spain section, one is the Spanish Chapter of the Education Society (CESEI) which promotes the same fields of IEEE EdSoc, particularly in Spain and in the Spanish language. The Spanish Chapter was created in 2004, and throughout its more than 18 years of history, the CESEI has promoted the IEEE values and has been recognized with prestigious awards in the field of Education. The CESEI was chosen as the recipient of the best chapter of the IEEE Spain Section in 2017. Additionally, the CESEI has received numerous international recognitions for its excellence in providing technical activities, membership services, and social activities. These include the Chapter Achievement Award in 2007, 2011, and 2018. Furthermore, the CESEI members have made exceptional contributions to the IEEE Education Society. Some of these include receiving the Distinguished Chapter Leadership Award in 2022, 2020, 2017, 2016, 2010, 2008, and 2006; the Distinguished Member Award in 2010; the Edwin C. Jones Jr. Meritorious Service Award in 2020, and 2009;  the IEEE Student Leadership Award in 2022, 2020, 2019, 2017, 2015, and 2012; and the IEEE William E. Sayle II Award for Achievement in Education in 2019.

Currently, the Chair of the CESEI is Prof. Francisco Mur (National University of Distance Education, UNED, Spain), who leads the board of directors constituted of five technical committees: (1) Dissemination and Relations with Other Associations, (2) Educational Resources Committee, (3) Accreditation and Evaluation, (4) Remote and Virtual Laboratories and (5) Standards. During 2022 and for the period of the two last years, the CESEI has continued with this trajectory of excellence. Thus, the CESEI has promoted many activities in international cooperation, particularly with EdSoc chapters of Portugal and Bangalore, among others. Additionally, the CESEI has promoted interest in the field of Innovation, Research, and Development (I+R+D). Concretely, the CESEI organized the International Workshop on Innovation, Transfer, and Research in University Education in Engineering. This activity attracted the participation of members of the Spanish Chapter of EdSoc and others from different continents (America, Europe, and Asia). Particularly, it was a round table focused on Knowledge Transfer and Research in Engineering Education with the participation of the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of the Journal of Latin American Learning Technologies (IEEE-RITA), the EiC of IEEE Transactions on Education (IEEE ToE), and the Founder of IEEE EdSoc Hong Kong Chapter. The moderator was the President of the IEEE EdSoc 2021-2022, and a member of CESEI, Edmundo Tovar. Additionally, the CESEI organized the webinar series called “IoT and New Frontiers in Education”, “University Teaching Experiences during the COVID-19 Alarm Period”, among others.
