EdSoc Showcased at SSIT STEM Workshop aboard the USS Hornet
The IEEE Education Society was proud to be featured at the SSIT STEM Workshop held on 7 September 2025 aboard the historic USS Hornet. Thanks to the collaboration of IEEE REACH, the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT), and the USS Hornet Museum, the Education Society enjoyed excellent visibility throughout the event.
EdSoc was represented by volunteer Tian Zheng, who engaged with students, parents, and educators interested in the intersection of technology, learning, and society. The workshop provided a valuable opportunity to highlight the Education Society’s mission and to connect with a broader STEM-focused community.
One of the standout moments of the day was a simple but powerful outreach tool: an EdSoc bookmark. Each bookmark carried the message:
“The IEEE Education Society cares deeply about learning technology. This bookmark you are holding represents one of humanity’s earliest learning technologies: it helps you read books.”
This thoughtful framing sparked curiosity and conversation. Both children and parents responded enthusiastically, using the bookmark as a starting point to discuss how learning technologies have evolved—from something as familiar as a bookmark to today’s advanced digital tools.
The positive reactions underscored how even small, tangible items can open the door to meaningful engagement with IEEE’s education-focused work. The IEEE Education Society looks forward to participating in future outreach events and continuing to promote innovative, inclusive approaches to learning and technology.
