Basis for Judging:

Evidence of distinction in long-term service to the IEEE Education Society and in contributions to the fields of interest to the IEEE. Selection criteria include leadership quality, innovative and important contributions to the IEEE Education Society, service and dedication to the IEEE Education Society, and technical achievements in the fields of interest of the IEEE.

Eligibility:

Individuals nominated for this award must have been members of the IEEE Education Society for at least ten (10) years. Multiple awards may be given each year, if suitable candidates are nominated. Individuals nominated must be current IEEE and Education Society members.

James Sluss

Biography

James J. Sluss Jr. (Senior Member, IEEE) received a B.S. degree in physics from Marshall University, Huntington, WV, USA, in 1984, and an M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA, in 1986 and 1989,
respectively.

He is a Regents Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering with the University of Oklahoma (OU), Norman, OK, USA, and has held various administrative roles of increasing responsibility within the OU system, most recently as Interim President of OU-Tulsa until the end of 2023. Notably, he served as the Systemwide Director of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 2005 to 2014, leading the School through a period of historic growth.

Dr. Sluss was the recipient of the FIE Ronald J. Schmitz Award in 2023, IEEE Education Society Distinguished Member Award in 2022, IEEE Education Society Edwin C. Jones, Jr., Meritorious Service Award in 2008 and the International Engineering Educator Honoris Causa “ING. PAED.IGIP h.c.” by the International Society for Engineering Education “for outstanding contributions in the field of Engineering Education” in 2015. He served on the Frontiers in Education (FIE) Steering Committee from 2012 to 2021, served as the Technical Program Co- Chair for FIE 2007, the General Go-Chair for FIE 2013, and as the FIE Steering Committee Chair from 2018 to 2020. He has served as a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Education Society from 2000 to present, serving in several officer positions, including a two-year term as the President from 2015 to 2016. He is in his 41 st year of membership in the IEEE and is a member of the IEEE Education Society and the IEEE Communications Society. He is a member of Optica (formerly, Optical Society of America), the International Society for Optics and Photonics, the International Society for Engineering Education, and the American Society of Engineering Education.

Jeffrey E. Froyd

Biography

Prof. Jeffrey E. Froyd has been recognized worldwide as an engineering education pioneer and for his achievements in various areas, including integrated curriculum development and evaluation; adoption, institutionalization, and propagation of educational innovations; curriculum redesign; and faculty development.

He has served as Project Director for a National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Education Coalition in which six institutions systematically renewed, assessed, and institutionalized innovative, integrated undergraduate engineering curricula. He has offered over 30 workshops on faculty development, curricular change processes, curriculum redesign and assessment in the U.S. and abroad.

Before joining the Department of Engineering Education of Ohio State University as a professor in November 2017, Prof. Froyd spent 18 years at Texas A&M University, most recently as a Research Professor in the Office of Engineering Academic and Student Affairs. Previously, he was a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rose-Hulman. There, he co-created the Integrated First-Year Curriculum in Science, Engineering and Mathematics, which was recognized in 1997 with a Hesburgh Award Certificate of Excellence.

Dr. Froyd, a Fellow of the IEEE and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), is a past Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on Education, a Senior Associate Editor for the Journal on Engineering Education, and an Associate Editor for the International Journal on STEM Education.
